Stories in the Stones Walk Tour

Join geologist Dr Jodie Fisher for a walking adventure through time 380 million years, in fact.

Did you know Drake’s Island was formed from volcanic rock? Or that you can fossil hunt right here in Plymouth? The guided Geo Trail takes you on a journey of discovery. Learn about Plymouth’s once-tropical climate; see the evidence of weird and wonderful ancient sea creatures; and feel the fossilized remains of old coral reefs.

Join geologist Dr Jodie Fisher for a venture through time that turns Royal William Yard and surrounding areas of the South West Coast Path into a living museum. From the natural landscape of Devil’s Point, to the building blocks used to create Royal William Yard’s grand buildings, the Geo Trail reveals the stories in the stones.

Suitable for all the family, you can also explore the Geo Trail in your own time too. Pop into Royal William Yard’s Gatehouse to find printed guides highlighting the trail stops. Each trail stop has a QR code for videos with Jodie sharing fascinating facts and tips to spot the fossils.

Dr Jodie Fisher

Jodie’s expertise in micro-palaeontology includes using micro-organisms to date rocks, to understand the environments that the rocks formed in, and in the modern environment to understand modern day environmental change, such as climate change, the impacts of pollution, and ocean acidification. She is interested in the climate and environmental changes that we can see from the Cretaceous period to the modern day, as well as investigating how these small organisms recolonise the environment after environmental disaster in the marine realm.

Jodie co-founded Girls into Geoscience, an initiative that introduces young female and non-binary people across the UK and Ireland, to explore their interest in geoscience. Now in its tenth year, the initiative hosts workshops, talks and fieldtrips, to give the girls an insight into the geosciences and the varied career pathways available in the sector. More than 1000 girls have now attended one of these events!
